Background

The $1.9 billion project was announced in Williston, North Dakota, on January 26, 2022 with Governor Doug Burgum present at the announcement event. [1] It is being developed by FX Solutions and owned and operated by Atlas Power; both are Montana-based corporations that developed the Atlas Power: Butte facility in Butte, Montana. The project will be built in three phases; the first stage of 240 MW is expected to be completed by the end of 2022, with full capacity of 700 MW to be achieved by the fourth quarter of 2023.[2] The project would consume approximately 14 times as much power as Williston -- North Dakota's 6th largest city.[3]
