Backgorund

In October 2023, during his visit to the Atyrau region, Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Almasadam Satkaliyev announced expansion of the Atyrau CHP power station.[16][17] According to the "Electric Power Industry Development Plan until 2035" released by the Ministry of Energy in February 2024, a new generation unit will be built to replace an older unit and will be commissioned in 2024.[18]

In the fall of 2023, the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Atyrau power station signed an investment agreement for the expansion and modernization of main equipment with an increase in the total electrical capacity by 130 MW. In 2023, a new turbine Unit 13 with a capacity of 65 MW was put into operation at the thermal power plant, and it is also planned to replace Unit 6 (60 MW) with Unit 6R (65 MW). According to the government of the Atyrau region, the process is expected to be completed in 2025. In addition, in 2024-2026 it is planned to commission new equipment - boiler Unit 15 and turbine Unit 11 with a capacity of 25 MW each.[16][19]
