Barents Stream Pipeline is a shelved gas pipeline in the Barents Sea, Norway.
Location
The Barents Sea Pipeline would connect gas fields the Barents Sea with either the Asgard transport pipeline or the Polarled pipeline currently operating in Norway.[1]
Project details
- Operator: Gassco [2]
- Owner:
- Parent company:
- Capacity:
- Length: 800 km (estimate)
- Diameter:
- Status: Shelved
- Start year:
- Cost: € 1 billion[3]
- Associated infrastructure: Asgard Transport System, Polarled Gas Pipeline
Background
In 2020, the Barents Sea pipeline was considered for development, with a route that will connect the Askeladd fields and other gas reserves in the Barents Sea with existing pipeline infrastructure, at the Asgard transport pipeline (1000 km) or the with the Polarled pipeline (820km).[4] In 2020 the project was estimated to cost €400 million.[5]Gassco and Rystad Energy collaborated to complete a feasibility assessment for the project, determining the project would be profitable if an additional 40bcm of gas was discovered on the continental shelf.[6]
In 2023, Gassco reported that an expansion to the Barents Sea Transmission system would be profitable based on discovered and presumed gas fields in the region.[2] There were no further reports on the project between 2023 and 2025. In 2024, GeoExPro reported that exploration in the area had not been as successful as expected.[7] The project was presumed shelved in 2025 because that it is contingent on expansion in Barents Sea production.
