Background

The Barzasskoye tovarischestvo coal mine (разрез Барзасское товарищество) is an operating surface mine in the Kemerovo Oblast in Russia. The Barzasskoye tovarishestvo coal mine is owned and operated by Barzasskoe Tovarischestvo LLC, which in turn is owned by Stroyservis JSC.[6]

The Barzasskoye tovarischestvo coal mine is the youngest mine of the company. It was put into operation in 2006 at the sites of the Glushinsky coal deposit.[7]

The company produces coal of coking and energy grades KS, KO, SS (Bituminous). There is a processing plant of its own with an annual processing capacity of 2.5 million tonnes of coal per year.[7]

In the 10 months of 2022, the mine produced 2.225 million tonnes of coal.[8]

In May 2022, there was a fatality at the mine when a truck fell in the pit.[9]

Expansion

In addition to the existing mine, two expansions were considered: Gusinsky-South and Shcherbinovsky. They were mentioned in Russia's 'Programme for Coal Industry Development up to 2035', released in June 2020.[10]

Gusinsky-South was planned to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2020.[10] It appears that the Gusinsky-South section was commissioned as planned in late 2019/2020 as Stroyservis has been reporting environmental indicators and explosion activity separately for this section of the mine.[11]

As for Scherbinovsky, in its press release from December 2021 the company mentioned the plan to produce a total of 4.1 million tonnes in 2022, including an additional 0.9 million tonnes from Scherbinovsky.[12] However as of September 2023 it appeared that this section was not yet producing as there was no explosion activity or environmental indicators reported for this section of the mine during 2022 or 2023.[11] In addition, actual 2022 production fell short of the previous expectation at an estimated 2.67 million tonnes.[8]
