Background

The pipeline would be owned and operated by GSPL India Gasnet Limited (GIGL). The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board authorized GIGL to build the pipeline in July 2011.[1] In February 2012 a Rs 855-crore contract was awarded to Gujarat State Petronet Ltd (GSPL) for construction.[5]The pipeline was listed as "Under Construction" in a January 2018 report by the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas.[6] In July 2018, however, it was reported that while some land on the pipeline's route had been acquired, construction had not begun and no progress has been made on the project in the last three years.[7]

On February 1, 2021, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget speech announced funds allocation for a gas pipeline project in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.[8][3][9]
