Description of Expansion

The company received a Terms of Reference in 2011 for a 4 X 250 MW coal-fired expansion.[3] However, the project appears to have been abandoned since there is no mention of it on the company website, and after four years the company has not applied for an environmental clearance.

The power station is owned and operated by NSPCL, a 50:50 joint venture company of NTPC Limited and Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) to generate power for captive proposes of various steel plants owned by SAIL.[4]

The power plant received export credit provided to General Electric.[5]

Poor quality coal supply

In January 2014 a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team from Gandhinagar in Gujarat raided premises of Indore-based Bhatia International for supplying poor quality coal to NTPC-SAIL Power Corporation, including the Bhilai Power Plant. The poor quality coal supply resulted in a total loss of Rs 92.91 crore to the government.[6]
