Background

In September 2023, Australian-owned Botala Energy began its Project Pitse pilot project, drilling four wells to test gas flow rates and production feasibility. [3]

The feasibility studies were complete in September 2024 with positive results - including the potential to produce LNG.[4]

In January 2025, Botala Energy signed a long-term LNG supply agreement with FFS Refiners to help address the South Africa gas crisis.[5]

In March 2025, the project secured its final regulatory approval needed to transition to commercial production, having received exclusive rights to develop and produce within the Mining License for 10 years. All environmental and planning approvals had been approved prior.[5]

Also in March 2025, Botala signed a binding letter of intent for a gas offtake agreement with South Africa's SCAW. SCAW will purchase up to 3.5 PJ/a of LNG in Phase 1, with an option to expand to 4.7 PJ/a in total. First LNG supply is targeted for 2027/2028.[5]

Phase 1, aimed to produce 200 tons per day of LNG, is anticipated for the end of 2026. Phase 2, aimed to produce up to 800 tons per day of LNG, is anticipated by 2028.[2]
