Dabieshan power station (中电国际黄冈大别山发电厂) is an operating power station of at least 2600-megawatts (MW) in Zhongguanyi Town, Macheng, Huanggang, Hubei, China with multiple units, some of which are not currently operating.

Background

The first two coal-fired units of Dabieshan power station, totaling 1,280 MW, were brought online in 2008. The plant is majority-owned by China Power Investment Corporation (CPI).[1]

First Expansion (Phase II)

In 2014, CPI planned to build additional coal-fired units at this plant, units 3-4 with a total capacity of 1,320 MW.[2][3]

Construction on the expansion began in August 2016, despite 2016 China regulations that suspended the building of new plants in the province until 2018.[4] However, because the plant is a government poverty reduction project, it is likely exempted from the restrictions on new coal plant builds.[5] It is planned for operation in 2019.[6]

Unit 3 was commissioned in May 2020.[7] Unit 4 was commissioned in December 2020.[8]

Second Expansion Proposed (Phase III)

Two additional 1,000 MW units were listed in Hubei Province's power development 14th Five-Year-Plan in November 2022.[9] The two units were permitted in January 2023, according to news reporting.[10]

Ownership

In July 2015, China Power Investment Corporation (CPI) and State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC) merged to become State Power Investment Corporation (国家电力投资集团), one of the five largest state-owned electricity producers in the People's Republic of China.[11]
