Dabieshan power station (中煤集团大别山电厂三期 2×1000MW清洁煤电扩建工程, 中电国际黄冈大别山发电厂) is an operating power station of at least 2600-megawatts (MW) in Zhongguanyi Town, Macheng, Huanggang, Hubei, China with multiple units, some of which are not currently operating.

Background
The first two coal-fired units of Dabieshan power station, totaling 1,280 MW, were brought online in 2008. The plant is majority-owned by China Power Investment Corporation (CPI).[5]
First Expansion (Phase II)
In 2014, CPI planned to build additional coal-fired units at this plant, units 3-4 with a total capacity of 1,320 MW.[6][7]
Construction on the expansion began in August 2016, despite 2016 China regulations that suspended the building of new plants in the province until 2018.[8] However, because the plant is a government poverty reduction project, it is likely exempted from the restrictions on new coal plant builds.[9] It is planned for operation in 2019.[10]
Unit 3 was commissioned in May 2020.[11] Unit 4 was commissioned in December 2020.[12]
Second Expansion Proposed (Phase III)
Two additional 1,000 MW units were listed in Hubei Province's power development 14th Five-Year-Plan in November 2022.[13] The two units were permitted in January 2023, according to news reporting.[14]
In October 2024, the EPC total contract tender was announced[15], and a construction launch ceremony was held in October 2024[16]. Construction milestones followed, including boiler steel frame erection in November 2024[17][18], main plant construction started in January 2025[19], and boiler large plate beam hoisting in May 2025.[20]. Further progress in 2025 included the toppling of cooling towers[21][22] and the placement of transformers[23].
In early 2026, the generator rotor was inserted[24], the boiler hydrostatic test was completed[25], and the turbine cylinder was bucked[26]. Unit 5 achieved grid connection in July 2026[27].
Unit 6's boiler steel frame erection occurred in January 2025[28], main plant construction progressed in February 2025[29], and the deaerator was positioned in October 2025[30].
Third Expansion Proposed (Phase IV)
A feasibility study review meeting was held in April 2025[31], and preliminary work was discussed in early 2026[32], but no further news has been reported since then.
Ownership
In July 2015, China Power Investment Corporation (CPI) and State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC) merged to become State Power Investment Corporation (国家电力投资集团), one of the five largest state-owned electricity producers in the People's Republic of China.[33]
