Background

CVG Ferrominera Orinoco (also known as FMO) was formed in 1976 following the nationalization of the Orinoco Mining Company and Iron Mines Company, subsidiaries of U.S. Steel and Bethlehem Steel Company that had been operating in Venezuela since the 1950s.[1] FMO's operations are split between the company's iron mines near Ciudad Piar and its DRI plant in Ciudad Guayana, both located in Venezuela's Bolívar state.[1] FMO's Midrex DRI facility has a nominal iron making capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum[2], but the plant has struggled to produce even a fraction of that amount in recent years, with output falling to less than 100,000 tonnes in 2016.[1]

In October 2021 the Venezuelan government reported that repair and maintenance efforts undertaken during 2020 and 2021, including replacement of the plant's zinc oxide towers and reconditioning of its BF6001 and BF6002 boilers, would allow FMO to resume iron production at the rate of 43,000 tonnes per month.[3]
