Background
Main Line
The main Cork to Dublin pipeline was commissioned in 1983 and was the largest gas infrastructure project in Ireland, and became the backbone of the country’s gas network. [16]The pipeline facilitated a switch from town gas to natural gas in the cities of Dublin and Cork and was originally was built to transport gas from Kinsale Gas fields to Dublin. [17]Originally built with a diameter of 240mm, Gas Networks Ireland now reports that the diameter of the pipeline is 450mm. [3][1]
Waterford Spur
In 1986 the government of Ireland approved the addition of a lateral spur from Clonmel in County Tipperary to Waterford in County Waterford.
Limerick Spur
In 1985 the government of Ireland approved the addition of a spur from the main Cork to Dublin Pipeline near Mitchelstown to Limerick. A line from Bruff to Mallow was also added during the project.[5]
Great Island Pipeline
The Great Island pipeline a lateral line that runs from the Cork to Dublin Pipeline at Bawnlusk, County Kilkenny to Great Island, Co. Wexford. SSE Thermal invested It was built to supply the Great Island power station. SSE reported investing €43 million in the pipeline—which is also the listed in Irish newspapers as the total cost of the pipeline project.[18][10] The pipeline project was a collaboration between SSE and Gas Networks Ireland. The pipeline was proposed at the same time as the power station conversion was announced in 2009. [19]
Wexford Extension
A further extension to the mainline was built connecting Wexford Town to the Cork To Dublin. The pipeline runs from Great Island, County Wexford to Wexford Town. The project was first announced at the same time as the Great Island Pipeline and was originally slated for a completion data of 2013. The project was partly financed by several industrial businesses in Wexford including Celtic Linen, Coca-Cola, Danone, Wexford Creamery, Wexford General Hospital and Irish Pride. The project was completed in 2016.[9]
New Towns Extensions
A number of additional lateral extensions and spurs have been added to the original pipeline over the last two decades. Kinsale Spur in 2011, Cahir in 2010, Cashel, and Monasterevin.[20][21]
