Background
In October 2024, Union Electric Company (d/b/a Ameren Missouri) received an approval from the Missouri Public Service Commission to build, own and operate an approximately 800-MW simple-cycle gas energy center at the site of the former coal-fired Meramec Energy Center facility, which Ameren retired in 2022.[5][6] The plant will be used on a limited basis to help primarily on the hottest summer days, the coldest winter days or when renewable energy is not generating as forecasted. The construction is expected to begin in 2026, and the plant is scheduled to be commissioned in 2027.[7]
According to the Quarterly Report submitted to the Missouri Public Service Commission in April 2025, full on-site construction mobilization is planned to occur by June 2025.[8] The initial proposal for the construction of the plant included four units capable of generating 176 MW during hot summer conditions while firing gas and over 200 MW on cold winter days on fuel oil back-up each, while Form EIA-860, published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration in June 2025, mentions only three duel-fueled units of 216 MW.[1][9]
