Manzanillo (Manuel Álvarez Moreno) power station (Complejo Termoeléctrico de Manzanillo) is an operating power station of at least 2754-megawatts (MW) in Manzanillo, Colima, Mexico with multiple units, some of which are not currently operating. It is also known as Manuel Álvarez Moreno.

Background
The Manzanillo power station, also known as the Manuel Álvarez Moreno power station, began as a 1200 MW power plant comprising four simple-cycle steam turbine units, each with a capacity of 300 MW.
Steam-fired units 1 and 2 from the original power plant were eventually combined with 6 new gas turbines to create a pair of combined cycle units, each with a "3 x GT, 1 x ST" configuration and a capacity of 727 MW.
Steam-fired units 3 and 4 have continued to operate independently, each retaining its original capacity of 300 MW.
In 1988, two additional steam-fired units (Units II-1 and II-2) were added to the plant, each with a capacity of 350 MW.
The resulting power plant had a total capacity of 2754 MW, summarized as follows:
- Unit I-1 (CC) 727 MW
- Unit I-2 (CC) 727 MW
- Unit I-3 (ST) 300 MW
- Unit I-4 (ST) 300 MW
- Unit II-1 (ST) 350 MW
- Unit II-2 (ST) 350 MW
Manzanillo III expansion project
The Manzanillo III power station, to be located adjacent to the existing Manzanillo I and II power stations, is one of several new combined cycle power projects initiated during the six-year term of Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024).
Official government estimates of the plant's capacity have ranged from 346.10 MW[19] to 348 MW[20] to 371.40 MW.[21]
Construction got underway in March 2022.[19] The project was said to be 65.10% complete as of Dec 31, 2023[21], and 86.75% complete by September 2024.[19]
As of September 2024, Mexico's federal electricity commission CFE anticipated that the plant would begin commercial operations in March 2025.[19]
Environmental Impact
The Manuel Álvarez Moreno power station is one of Mexico's leading emitters of environmental pollutants, including particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide.[22][23] Environmental activists in the Manzanillo community struggling to improve conditions for their community, which are exacerbated by the power station, have faced major pushback with some even being murdered including David Díaz Valdez in July 2020.[24] Activists say that disease has increased since the plant began operating.
