Background

The Manuel Álvarez Moreno power station is one of Mexico's leading emitters of environmental pollutants, including particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide.[18][19] Environmental activists in the Manzanillo community struggling to improve conditions for their community, which are exacerbated by the power station, have faced major pushback with some even being murdered including David Díaz Valdez in July 2020.[20] Activists say that disease has increased since the plant began operating.
