Hwange Colliery Company Limited operates the mine, which is a publicly listed company, the government of Zimbabwe is the largest shareholder owning 36% of the company. Mining began in 2006 and the life-of-mine is expected to run until 2046. The mine supplies thermal coal to the nearby Hwange power station, as well as metallurgical coal to export markets.
