Background

The first six generating units of the Chandrapura power station were reportedly commissioned from 1964-1979.[2] However, the details of Units 4-6 remained uncertain, and DVC's website later omitted the units entirely from a list of Chandrapura's commissioned units.[3]

Phase 2 of the power station added 500 MW of capacity with the commissioning of two 250 MW generating units (Units 7-8) in July and November 2011.[4]

2025: Proposed 1,600 MW expansion

In February 2025, DVC announced plans to build two new 800 MW supercritical units at the Chandrapura power station. According to the project lead, the central government had already given in-principle approval for the proposed units. DVC reportedly planned to invest Rs 16,500 crore (US$1.9 million) in the project.[5][6]

Retirement

Unit 1 (130 MW) was retired in January 2017.[7]

Unit 2 (130 MW) was retired in July 2017.[8]

Unit 3 (130 MW) was retired in March 2020.[9]
