Background

Residents of Kilfi County are heavily protesting against the construction of this cement plant since it would impact the Mawe Meru or Chasimba Caves which holds great cultural meaning to many[2]. The caves are also home to 31 endangered plant species[3]. In addition there is worry whether this will truly bring economic opportunity or if it will be another health hazard[2]. Locals are hoping the company will allow for public participation in the planning and construction of the plant.
