Background

Cheviot is a redevelopment of the Emerald field, which was discovered in 1975 and put into production by Midland & Scottish Energy Ltd in 1992 after an “unusually large number of setbacks and changes.”[1] Due to “inadequate project planning and execution,”[2] the field was abandoned after eight percent of the original oil in place was extracted.[2] Cheviot is considered “one of the largest undeveloped fields in the UK North Sea.”[3]

In 2003, Alpha Petroleum was awarded the license for the field.[2] As of 2022, Alpha has a 100% interest in the Cheviot field. Waldorf Production announced that it has acquired Alpha Petroleum from Shorelight Partners on July 11, 2022.[4]

According to the NSTA Energy Pathfinder, Alpha Petroleum was targeting first oil in Q2 2021, however an April 2020 update said that target was delayed due to COVID-19.[5] As of 2022, Cheviot is expected to start commercial production in 2024, reach peak production in 2025, and continue producing until the end of the field's economic life in 2039.[6]

Friends of the Earth calculated the potential lifecycle emissions of the field to be 34 MtCo2e, and stated putting into into production would be ignoring the guidance of the IEA’s Net Zero by 2050 report.[7]
