Chhatak Cement Chhatak Cement Plant (ছাতক সিমেন্ট কোম্পানি ছাতক সিমেন্ট প্ল্যান্ট (Bangla)), also known as Chhatak BCIC, is an integrated cement plant operating in Chhatak, Sylhet, Bangladesh.

Background

Chhatak Cement Company Limited was established in 1937 as a private company when it was named Assam Bengal Cement Company. After the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, when the factory was abandoned by the private owner, it came under the control of the East Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation in 1966. After the independence of Bangladesh, it came under the control of the BMOGC, later the Bangladesh Mineral Development Corporation, and lastly from 1 July 1982 it is handed over to Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC).

In October 2016, the government owned BCIC signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabia’s Al Rajhi Group to build a new production line and a captive power plant at the Chhatak Cement plant. The new dry production line and power plant will have a production capacity of 1.5Mt/yr and 330MW respectively. As of September 2023, the completion of the project was being thrown into doubt due to uncertainty about securing limestone from India. Despite the construction of new silos and other equipment at the site, the unit has not been operational since early 2020. The new line was originally planned to start operation in 2020 but this was delayed until 2023. The BCIC has now proposed that completion of the project be extended to mid-2025 and the budget raised to BDT 1,418 crore.
