Background
The Chongqing Fangsheng power station was commissioned in 2003 in the city of Wansheng, Chongqing Municipality, China.[1]. With rising energy demand in Wansheng, the power station was built to complement the already-existing nearby Nantong power station (also owned by the Nantong Mining Company), which was built in 1953. For a while, both plants were supplied with coal from the Nantong coal mine.[2] While in operation, the plants served 65 industrial companies and generated electricity for 20,000 residents.[3] In 2017, it had a registered capital of 50.5 million RMB.[4]
In 2012, Wansheng made it their mission to become a nationally renowned tourist city and promoted its development into a sustainable city. Since 2013, Wansheng has successively shut down major coal mines and eliminated excess coal mine production capacity.[2] In 2017, both the Fansheng and Nantong power stations were retired, along with several other coal plants in the province of Chongqing.[3][5] They will now be built into the upcoming China Thermal Power Industry Expo Park, a popular science education and research base and tourist attraction.[3] Estimated investment for the park is 450 million yuan; the park will cover an area of around 120 acres.[2] In 2015, the power station reportedly employed 145 workers.
