Background

The Airvault cement plant first opened in 1919, and today operates with a total capacity of 2 million tonnes per year of cement production.[3][4]

The Airvault cement plant is one of four plants included in owner Heidelberg Materials' country-wide Decarbonization Program. A modernization of the plant, which included replacement of the two existing semi-dry firing lines with a new dry firing line with a precalciner, was completed in 2025.[5] The company also planned to increase the alternative fuel substitution rate to 88%, with the goal of reducing specific CO2 emissions by 17%.[6]

In February 2026, the French government announced that the Airvault cement plant would be a recipient of part of $2 billion allocated for Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) projects. At Airvault, the project, titled GOCO2, aims to capture 1 million tons of CO2 annually.[7]
