Background
In July 2022, the oil and gas publication Upstream reported unconfirmed speculation that Eni was considering the possibility of deploying a second floating liquefied natural gas vessel in Mozambique. A company spokesperson said: "Eni and its partners are actively evaluating all technical solutions to allow timely production of Mozambique's considerable gas resources."[7]
In June 2023, AllAfrica reported that Eni was planning to build the project, known as Coral North, as a duplicate of the Coral South FLNG Terminal project. Coral North FLNG Terminal will be anchored 10 kilometers from the Coral South platform. The project will have a capacity of 3.37 mtpa and is expected to cost US$7.2 billion. The original start date was 2027.[8][9]
In March 2024, one of the project's contractors, Technip Energies, said the project could potentially reach a final investment decision (FID) in late 2024.[10]
In May 2024, the United Arab Emirates' ADNOC announced it had acquired Galp's 10% stake in the Area 4 concession of the Rovuma Basin, granting it a 10% stake in Rovuma LNG Terminal, Coral South FLNG Terminal, and Coral North FLNG Terminal.[11]
In April 2025, the FLNG project received approval from Mozambique's government, moving the project closer to a 2025 FID. The start-up date was pushed to 2028.[8] The same month, it started the bidding process for two significant contracts on the project. In June 2025, Eni said it had received positive feedback from potential investors.[12][13]
In October 2025, Eni took a positive FID on the project.[14]
