Coveñas FSRU

From Global Energy Monitor

Background

The Coveñas FSRU is a planned floating storage and regasification terminal located at the Coveñas Port in Sucre, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Developed by Ecopetrol, the project aims to diversify the country’s gas import infrastructure, complementing the existing Cartagena (SPEC LNG) terminal.[1][2][3][4][5]

Ecopetrol intends to leverage existing infrastructure at the Cenit-operated Coveñas port host the FSRU and connect to the Cańo Limón-Coveñas gas pipeline. The terminal's operations will require conversion of the transport infrastructure between Coveñas, Jobo, and Vasconia. Ecopetrol's conversion plans will allow the terminal to have an initial regasification capacity of 130 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) by 2027, and an increased capacity by 2029, when conversion of all the required infrastructure is finalized. Like the Ballena FSRU, the Coveñas FSRU is expected to help mitigate rising gas prices and supply shortages particularly affecting the Caribbean, Bogotá‑region, and southwestern markets.[1][2][3][4][5]
