Background

In 2018, Irish-based Petrel Resource submitted a proposal to Russian state gas monopoly Gazprom to develop a liquefied natural gas export facility on the Crimean Peninsula.[1] The export terminal was to be fed primarily by a gas pipeline from existing discoveries in western Siberia and central Asia.[1]

In June 2018 the Ukrainian embassy in Ireland warned Petrel that the Ukraine did not recognize Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea, and urged the company not to build a terminal in a part of the Crimea controlled by Russia.[2][3] Shortly thereafter, Petrel decided to withdraw from the project due to the threat of US sanctions.[4]

As of June 2022, there had been no further news of the project in four years, and it was presumed to be cancelled.
