Background
In December 2013, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering was selected to build the MOL Challenger FSRU at the Okpo Shipyard located in Geoje Island.[10]
The FSRU was christened in October 2017 and docked at Dörtyol, Turkey in February 2018. The vessel has an LNG storage capacity of 263,000 cubic meters and has LNG re-shipment and gas transfer capabilities. Its specifications allow for the re-export of LNG and supply of LNG to neighboring regions where the vessel is located.[11] The vessel was leased through 2020 by Turkish gas company BOTAŞ.[12]
In December 2019 it was announced that Türkiye's state gas importer BOTAS was buying a new floating LNG import vessel that was going to be used to supply gas to two onshore terminals -- the existing terminal at Dörtyol, MOL FSRU Challenger, on Türkiye's East Mediterranean coast, and a new terminal being constructed at the Gulf of Saros in northwest Türkiye.[13]
S&P Global Platts reported that "the Dortyol terminal had not been used as much as had been anticipated and that the lease on the existing vessel moored there would not be renewed. Instead Botas is buying its own vessel, construction of which is expected to be completed in 2020. The new vessel will be used to supply gas at Dortyol, but more frequently at the new Saros terminal, as most of Türkiye's gas demand is in the northwest of the country. Botas is currently constructing a jetty and terminal at the Saros location."[13]
BOTAS bought its own vessel, the Ertuğrul Gazi, construction of which was completed in 2020. The vessel arrived in Turkey in April 2021, and received its first LNG cargo from Algeria on July 2, 2021.[14][15] The Ertuğrul Gazi can store 170,000 cbm of LNG has a regasification capacity of 28 million cubic meters per day.[16]
In February 2025, Egypt was reportedly considering leasing the Ertuğrul Gazi vessel to cover demand between June and November.[17]
