Dangote Cement Pout Cement Plant (Cimenterie Dangote Thiès) is an integrated cement plant operating in Pout, Thiès, Senegal.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the cement plant in Pout, Thiès, Senegal[1]:
Coordinates (WGS 84): 14.796560, -17.041497 (exact)[2]
Background
Another cement company in Senegal, Sococim sued the state for enabling Dangote to bypass the permitting process and the environmental impact studies before constructing their plant.[3] Sococim alleged that Dangote paid a prominent Senegalese figure 12.6 million to build the plant.[3]
The plant also came at the cost of displacing people of the Galane village. Residents were just relocated a few meters away yet still experienced a decline in water and an increase of noise and air pollution.[4] Dangote built 44 homes where families of ten or more are now living.[4] The homes are connected to electricity and a water source, but are costly.[4] The cement plant requires 4500 cubic meters of water per day for the coal powered electric system to cool.[4] As a result, communal water wells which residents rely on for daily and agriculture use are drying up. The underground water has also been salinized due to seawater intrusion occurring from plant operations.[4] The diminishing supply and quality of the water is also impacting agriculture as it is becoming more difficult to care and sell the cattle.[4] Cattle owners and residents are having to walk 3 km for fresh water.
