Datang Xinyu power station (大唐国际新余发电厂) is an operating power station of at least 2000-megawatts (MW) in Liangshan Town, Yushui, Xinyu, Jiangxi, China with multiple units, some of which are not currently operating. It is also known as 大唐国际新余第二发电公司 (Phase II Unit 1&2).

Background

The two existing coal-fired units of Datang Xinyu-1 power station, totaling 440 MW, were brought online between 1995 and 1996. The plant is owned by China Datang.[5]

Proposed expansion

Datang is planning to build two additional coal-fired units at the site, the Datang Xinyu-2 power station, with a total planned capacity of 2,000 MW.[5]

It was permitted for construction in 2015.[6]

As of May 2018, Planet satellite photos from April 2018 show no construction.

The project appears in the Jiangxi Province Development Plan of the Railway Economic Belt (2019-2025), released in October 2019.[7]

Various news sources reported that construction began between December 2021 and April 2022, but it was unclear what the construction involved.[8]

By June 2022, construction was confirmed underway.[9]

Unit 1 achieved a number of operational milestones in 2024, including its first boiler ignition (May)[10], grid connection (August)[11], and successful completion of the 168-hour trial run (September)[12][13].

Unit 2 also progressed through its construction phases in 2024, completing milestones such as the boiler hydrostatic test (March)[14], turbine bucket (June)[15], and steam blow (September)[16]. It successfully connected to the grid in October 2024[17] and completed its 168-hour trial run, entering commercial operation later that month[18].
