Background

Datong power station consists of two 135 MW units built in 2013. The first five units have been retired. It is majority-owned by ChinaCoal.

In 2005, the power plant was included in the Shanxi provincial 11th Five-Year development plan for the coal industry. On March 7, 2006, the unit intervention system plan was approved by Shanxi Electric Power Company, which agreed to connect the project to the power grid after completion.

On March 12, 2008, the China National Development and Reform Commission approved the coal-electricity integration project to build 2×135MW coal gangue burning power plant. On October 8 of the same year, the project began to pour the first tank of concrete.

On November 15, 2010, unit 1 successfully passed the 72+24 hours test run and was handed over to production. On June 12, 2011, Unit 2 operated safely for 100 consecutive days[1].

Proposed expansion

In 2022, a proposed 2 x 1,000 MW expansion to the Datong power station was included in a list of key power projects in the Shanxi province.[2] The project had reportedly received preliminary approval in February 2022.[2]
