David E. Wojick

From Global Energy Monitor

David E. Wojick is a well-known and vocal climate change "skeptic", with strong links to the coal industry and a now-defunct coal industry front group called the Greening Earth Society. [1]

Wojick is not a climate scientist

Wojick has been described as a journalist and policy analyst. According to a search of 22,000 academic journals, Wojick has not published any research in a peer-reviewed journal on the subject of climate change.

Wojick, Coal and Electricity

Between December 1998[1] and September 2001[2] he was listed as a "Scientific Adviser" to the Greening Earth Society, a group that was funded and controlled by the Western Fuels Association (WFA), an association of coal-burning utility companies. WFA founded the group in 1997, according to an archived version of its website, "as a vehicle for advocacy on climate change, the environmental impact of CO2, and fossil fuel use."[3]

In his role as a "policy analyst," Wojick's client list has included AES Corporation, one of the largest electrical generation companies, with much of that in the form of coal, and Allegheny Energy, a company that generates 95% of its power from coal. The Chief of Naval Research and Greening Earth Society were also listed as former clients.[4]

Wojick was a columnist for the Electricity Daily, a now-defunct electrical industry trade magazine.[5]

Wojick and industry-funded “think tanks

Wojick is listed as "contributing editor" " to Environment and Climate News, a publication of the Heartland Institute, a US think tank at the forefront of the attack on climate change science. Heartland has received over half a million in funding from ExxonMobil, the largest oil company in the world. Wojick lists the Cato Institute and Citizens for a Sound Economy as some of his former "clients." [2]

Natural Resources Stewardship Project

Dr. David Wojick, PE, is listed among the "Allied Experts" of the energy industry lobbyists-controlled Natural Resources Stewardship Project, as an "Independent journalist and policy analyst, specializing in Kyoto issues". [3]

Climate Change Debate

Wojick is the owner of the list at ClimateChangeDebate.org.

Climate change and K-12 education

An anonymous donor called "Heartland Insider" released documents in February 2012 of the Heartland Institute's budget, fundraising plan, and Climate Strategy for 2012. The 2012 Climate Strategy stated that goals of the organization included working with David E. Wojick on "providing [K-12 school] curriculum that shows that the topic of climate change is controversial and uncertain - two key points that are effective at dissuading teachers from teaching science."[6] Wojick would create twenty teaching modules a year, receiving $5,000 per module.[7]
