The Dhanpuri-Amlai Coal Mines consists of Dhanpuri-Amlai opencast and Dhanpuri underground coal mine projects operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, with a capacity of 4.966 million-tonnes-per-annum on an area of 1732.179 Ha is located in villages Baragawan, Devhara, Bemhouri and Patna, Tehsils Sohagpur and Anuppur in Districts Shahdol-Annupur, Madhya Pradesh, India.

Background on Mine

The Dhanpuri-Amlai Coal Mines consists of Dhanpuri-Amlai opencast and Dhanpuri underground coal mine projects operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, with a capacity of 4.966 million-tonnes-per-annum on an area of 1732.179 Ha is located in villages Baragawan, Devhara, Bemhouri and Patna, Tehsils Sohagpur and Anuppur in Districts Shahdol-Annupur, Madhya Pradesh, India. The project is an amalgamation of Dhanpuri-Amlai Group of Opencast Coal Mine Projects leading to expansion in production from 1.5 MTPA to 3.50 MTPA capacity (normative) and a peak production of 4.75 MTPA and expansion in ML area from 1309.554 ha to a total project area of 1500.549 ha.

The Dhanpuri Underground coal mine of capacity 0.216 MTPA on a lease area of 231.63 Ha has been in operation since 1978 and was operating on the consent letters under the Air and Water pollution control act from Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board. In 2015 SECL applied for environment clearance once the workable seams were nearing exhaustion of its capacity.[1]

Amlai OCP was closed and Amlai OC Sector B was opened of 2.025 MTPA capacity and Dhanpuri OCP of 2.725 MTPA consists of 3 sectors – Dhanpuri Sector A, Dhanpuri Sector D & Dhanpuri Sector C. Dhanpuri Sector C was closed in 1988 due to exhaustion of reserves and the dumps (external & internal) have been reclaimed. Dhanpuri Sector A was operational and balance life was 2 years at the time of grant of environment clearance. Dhanpuri Sector D is operational and balance life was 11 years at the grant of the environment clearance.[2]
