Diantou power station (陕煤集团黄陵矿业店头发电厂, 沮源发电2×1000MW发电项目) is an operating power station of at least 1320-megawatts (MW) in Diantou Town, Huangling, Yan'an, Shaanxi, China with multiple units, some of which are not currently operating. It is also known as 陕煤黄陵店头电厂三期2×1000MW机组扩建项目 (Phase III Unit 5 & 6), 陕煤黄陵店头电厂二期2×1000MW机组扩建项目 (Phase II Unit 3 & 4).

Background on Project

Huangling Coal Mining applied for environmental clearance to build a 2 x 660 MW coal plant in Huangling.[5] The EIA of the power plant was approved by the Shaanxi provincial EPA in September 2016.[6]

There were no further developments on the project until March 2019, when sponsor Huangling Coal Mining again discussed plans for the project.[7] As of March 2020 Huangling Coal Mining had completed the pre-feasibility study and was seeking environmental clearance.[8] The project was permitted in March 2020, with operation planned for 2023.[9][10]

Construction began on unit 1 in May 2021.[11] Unit 2 also appeared to be underway.

By October 2022, a second 2 x 1,000 MW phase was permitted. The first phase was still under construction.[12]

In May 2023, it was reported that construction of the first phase was nearly complete.[13] By the end of the same month, Unit 1 had begun operation.[14] In June 2023, Unit 2 also successfully connected to the grid and began operating.[15][16][17]

Construction activities for Unit 3 progressed from early 2024 through 2026, including equipment procurement, the first concrete pour for the main plant (June 2024)[18], and various structural milestones such as cooling tower and chimney completions, and boiler header placement[19][20][21]. The boiler for Unit 1 was ignited in June 2026[22].

Construction milestones for Unit 4 included the completion of the cooling tower base (October 2024)[23], boiler steel frame placement (November 2024)[24], and boiler header placement (July 2025)[25]. The generator stator was placed in early 2026[26], and the turbine cylinder was bucked in June 2026[27].

The Phase III of the project received approval in December 2024[28][29]. Subsequent activities included tenders for feasibility and EIA reports in 2025[30] and a survey and design tender in July 2026[31][32].
