Background

The Dotternhausen cement plant utilizes oil shale as an alternative material, in place of clinker, to produce Optimo brand cement which has a lower carbon footprint than typical ordinary portland cement. Owner Holcim also announced in 2024 a partnership with Capsol Technologies to implement a CapsolGo carbon capture demonstration plant at the Dotternhausen plant. Capsol will use the Dotternhausen plant to test carbon capture technology using its hot potassium carbonate (HPC) solvent. Testing will run for four months, starting in the second quarter of 2025.
