Background
Durdevik coal mine is a surface and underground coal mine located in Durdevik, Bosnia-Herzegovina. The coal mine began operations in 1936 when the first pit Suhodanj was opened. The mine is operated by RMU Durdevik, which is 100% owned by Elektroprivreda BiH.
Organizational parts of RMU Đurđevik are: surface coal mine Višća and underground coal mine Đurđevik.[2]
Coal from the mine is used to supply Tuzla Thermal Power Plant.[3][4]
In 2020 the mine produced 0.55 million tonnes, of which 0.13 million tonnes from the underground mine.[5]
Restructuring and Potential Closure
The parent company Elektroprivreda is undertaking restructuring and recapitalization of its seven coal mines over 2021-2023. The company also plans to adjust its coal mines with the national plan to reduce emissions, which will affect the drop in overall production (5 million tons of coal in 2021 is expected to drop to 4.6 by 2022 and 4.3 in 2023).[6]
Experts anticipate that none of Bosnia’s remaining 11 coal mines will remain operational in the coming decades as eco pressures grow and the country seeks to clean up as it courts EU membership.[7][8]
A media source from February 2023 reported that the mine announced a tender worth 67 million marks (ca USD 36 million) to hire private companies to perform mining works, justified by the lack of own manpower and equipment, despite employing 700 workers. If hired, the plan would be to mine 0.4 million tonnes in the remainder of 2023 and the same in 2024. The article inferred that it would be Elektroprivreda paying for such contract as the company does not have funds to pay.[9]
