Background

Dzerzhinsky underground coal mine was owned by Energiya-NK LLC, a subsidiary of MelTek. Previously the mine changed ownership several times.

The mine went bankrupt already in 2007 but continued production until 2019. There was a program to close the mine from 2018 to 2022. As of 2019, according to the first stage of the company's liquidation, the treatment areas have already been dismantled, the equipment has been taken to the surface and transferred to other companies. The second stage includes isolation works, dismantling of pumps, de-energisation, cessation of air and heat supply to the mine. Demolition of all premises on the surface.

As of July 2019, the shafts were being backfilled, technological buildings and structures being dismantled, an excavation was being developed to store elements of dismantled structures. About 20 hectares of reclaimed land was being prepared for returning of the city.

It was the last operating underground mine in Prokopyevsk region. Its production level was about 0.8 million tonnes per annum.
