Background
In May 2026, the governor of Enugu State announced plans to build a 660 MW coal-fired power station using domestic coal sources within the state. Construction was reportedly expected to begin in July 2026 and be completed in two years.[2][3] As of July 2026, it was unclear whether the 660 MW proposal by Enugu State was related to plans from April 2026 to build a 350 MW coal power plant in Oji River, Enugu State. The Oji River project was reportedly also expected to be completed in two years.[4]
