Background

Eski Çeltek coal mine is a mine using both underground and surface mining in Eski Çeltek, Suluova, Amasya, Turkey. It is operated by Eski Çeltek Bütçe İçi Kömür Enerji ve Yenilenebilir Enerji İşletmesi, owned by the Amasya Local Government.[1]

Mining at the Eski Çeltek Coal Mine started in 1927 under the State Raılways of Turkey. In 1958, local provincial government overtook the mine, which it still operates throguh Eski Çeltek Bütçe İçi Kömür Enerji ve Yenilenebilir Enerji İşletmesi (Eski Çeltek Budget Lignite Energy and Renewable Energy Enterprise). The mine consists of an underground and a surface site and produces 0.25 million tons a year.[1] It reserves stand at 9.7 million tons, divided as 4 million proven and 5.7 million probable.[2]
