Background on Mine

The proposed Fatehpur Opencast Coal Mine consists of Fatehpur and Fatehpur East coal mine project 1 MTPA and 10 MTPA, respectively, and is part of Mand-Raigarh Coalfield, located in Korba and Raigarh district, State of Chhattisgarh, India.

Fatehpur coal mine was jointly allotted to SKS Ispat and Power Ltd., Prakash Industries Ltd. for production of 1 MTPA coal for use in their sponge iron and steel plant. However, the coal block was surrounded in controversy for alleged corruption and false claims for the coal requirement, leading to filing to criminal cases against the promoters of the project.[1] The project is located in the villages Samarkana, Gitkuhwari, Phulsari, Girari, Basin, Kodwari and Karmitikra in Korba & Raigarh districts and has the total reserve capacity of 120 MT.[2]

The proposed Fatehpur East Coal Block (10 MTPA (peak) in a total project area of 1913.208 ha which includes an ML area of 1728.208 ha) of M/s Fatehpur East Coal Private Ltd., is located in Mand Raigarh Coalfields, Tehsil Dharamjaigarh, dist. Raigarh, Chhattisgarh. M/s Fatehpur East Coal Private Ltd is a Joint Venture between RKM Powergen Private Limited; Visa Powr Limited; Athena Infra-projects Private Limited; J L D Yavatmal Energy Limited and Vandana Vidhyut Limited. The total geological reserve is 330.9333 MT. The mineable reserve 266 MT.[3] The project was mired in controversy over the land acquisition related issues from beginning and faced stiff oppsoition.[4]

Fatehpur and Fatehpur East coal mines were both cancelled alogn with 214 other coal blocks by the Supreme Court in 2014. They are yet to be allotted to any other company as of now.
