Background

Fellside Power Station supplies electricity the national grid and steam to the Sellafield nuclear plant.[6][7]

A planning application for a replacement plant was submitted by Sellafield Ltd in the Summer of 2017 to Cumbria County Council and to Copeland Borough Council. It described Fellside as "an aging asset approaching the end of its design life with a large degree of obsolesence." This plan includes the demolition and clearance of existing CHP plant between 2021 and 2025. However, as of 2018, the timetable was "already showing signs of slippage." Reports said as of 2018, the CHP was expected to be taken out of service by 2025.[8] In 2020, reportedly construction of the new steam generation plant had already begun, and the plant was expected to begin normal operations in early 2023.[9]

It was still listed as amongst the "Power Stations in the UK" that were "operational at the end of May 2021"[10] but according to the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, as of October 2021, it has not generated power since September 2020.[11]
