Background

In December 2023, Calpine CEO Thad Hill announced Calpine’s decision to proceed with advanced development and construction of a new power plant in Freestone County. The company’s new simple-cycle gas-fired power plant will be built adjacent to Calpine’s existing Freestone Energy Center. The new facility will be operational before the summer of 2026.[4] Calpine announced earlier in 2023 that critical components, including gas turbines and generators, had been procured and were ready for deployment. The new facility is expected to be operational before the summer of 2026.[5]
