Gas Networks Ireland LNG Terminal

From Global Energy Monitor

Background

In March 2025, the government of Ireland announced that it had authorized the development of the country's first offshore terminal, which will be owned by the system operator Gas Networks Ireland. The project was described by the government as a "strategic gas emergency reserve" and not a commercial project.[1][2] Bloomberg described the move as "rolling back on its ambitious climate goals in favor of beefing up energy security."[1] The project was estimated to cost €300 million and will have a storage capacity of 170,000 cubic meters of LNG. The location of the facility has not yet been specified.[2]
