Background

Located in central Mexico about 100km northeast of Mexico City, the Ciudad Sahagún plant is the largest of three electric steel plants owned by Gerdau Corsa. [2]

The Ciudad Sahagún plant, which has the capacity to generate 1 million tons of crude steel and 700,000 tons of finished steel annually, began operating commercially in 2015.[3][4] The plant produces rebar and steel profiles for construction and industrial uses.[4][5]

The plant is owned by Gerdau Corsa, a Mexican subsidiary of Brazilian steel-maker Gerdau, formed in 2008 when Gerdau S.A. purchased a 49% stake in the Mexican holding company Corsa Controladora, S.A. de C.V.[6] Gerdau Corsa's two other Mexican steel mills are the 500,000-ton-per-annum Tultitlán plant and the 150,000-tpa La Presa plant.[2][7]
