Background
Giral Lignite Thermal Power Project is a 2 x 125 MW plant owned by Rajasthan RV Utpadan Nigam (RVUN), the publicly owned power generation company in Rajasthan.[1]
The fuel for the plant is from lignite mines near Giral.[2]
In May 2023, a study published in the journal Energy looked at water consumption by coal plants across India and found that about 30% of the country's 174 coal power plants are in regions of declining freshwater availability. The study, titled "Vulnerability assessment of thermal power plants in India under water stress conditions," reportedly found that the Giral power station was "extremely vulnerable to surface water availability."[3]
Expansion
RVUN reportedly received environmental clearance for a 2 x 125 MW expansion (units 3 and 4) in 2004, although the permit is not posted online, and as of 2014 the expansion is not mentioned on the company's website.
