Background

The Goedehoop coal mine is an underground mine in Vandyksdrift, Emalahleni, Nkangala, Mpumalanga, South Africa.[3]

The mine is operated by Thungela Resources Limited, a subsidiary of Anglo American.[4] The Goedehoop coal mine is located approximately 165 km east of Johannesburg, South Africa. It began operation in 1983, and in 2005, merged with the former Bank Colliery.[5] The Bank Colliery site is now known as "Goedehoop North" and is where all mining currently takes place; the original Goedehoop Colliery site area known as "Goedehoop South" closed in 2019.[4] Coal from the mine is primarily exported through the Richards Bay Coal Terminal. The mine has a total workforce of 1456.[3][5]

On June 4, 2021, previous owner Anglo American completed a demerger of its South African thermal coal assets, including the Goedehoop Mine, into a newly incorporated company, Thungela Resources Limited (Thungela).[6]

As of 2021, the reported life of mine is 4 years and mining operations are expected to cease in 2025.[7]
