Background
Gornyak-1 coal mine (Горняк-1) operates several surface mine sections in Sakhalin Island, Russia.
Gornyak-1 was founded in 2001 and operates several mine sections in Sakhalin.[2] It appears to be owned by one private individual.[3] From 2001 the company operates in the Nevelsky district and from 2005 also in the Smirnyhovsky district.[4]
The company supplies coal to domestic power companies such as Sakhalin GRES-1 power station and Sakhalin GRES-2 power station as well as exports coal to Japan, China and India.[5]
In 2018, Gornyak-1 coal mines produced 1.3 million tonnes.[6] In 2021, production was 2 million tonnes, with 1.2 million tonnes of subbituminous coal and 0.8 million tonnes of lignite coal.[7][4]
Environmental issues
Nature destruction has been reported in the Nevelsky district since 2018, including pollution of the river as well as many episodes of rock slides which destroying several houses and deformed local roads. Grey dust in the town of Nevelsk has also been an issued. Gornyak-1's mining activity is blamed for these adverse impacts.[8][9]
Expansion
In February 2023, Gornyak-1 LLC won the auction for the southern part of the Grafsky area of the Pervomaisky coal deposit. The deposit is also located in the Nevelsky District. The Company was the only bidder in the auction and received the right to use subsoil for RUB 2.913 million. C2 category reserves of the site amount to 440 thousand tonnes of hard coal. Gornyak-1 has already been developing the Grafsky area of the Pervomayskoye deposit since 2010 on the basis of a certificate of discovery of the deposit.[10]
In March 2023, Gornyak-1 also won the auction for the Lopatinsky section of the Gornovzavodsk coal deposit, also in Nevelsky district. [11]
