Background

Green Octopus Mitteldeutschland is a proposed hydrogen pipeline in Central Germany, aimed at connecting industrial clusters across Salzgitter, Rostock, Berlin, Eisenhüttenstadt, Magdeburg and Leipzig-Halle.

ONTRAS plans to build 115 km of new dedicated hydrogen pipelines, and will repurpose another 190 km of existing natural gas pipelines for the project. The project is expected to be operational in 2027.[3] According to a joint press release by the German government, ONTRAS has been given approval to start work on the project in Dec, 2022.[4]

In Dec, 2022, The BMWK granted approval for the early start of the measures after all the federal states concerned have committed their respective state shares, and the project is awaiting a decision on IPCEI funding.[5]
