Background

In 2019, Jinan Corporation announced plans to build a coal-fired power station to serve one of its chrome smelters in Gweru. Excess power would reportedly be supplied to Zimbabwe's national grid.[2] The capacity of the power station was not announced at the time.

In December 2023, it was reported that Jinan-Almid (Pvt) Ltd. was planning to build a 720 MW power station in Gweru. The power station was expected to begin power generation in April 2024.[3][4] It was unclear whether the Gweru power station was one of the unnamed independent power producer (IPP) coal plants referenced in November 2023 reporting.[5][6]
