Background

Halfgewonnen Coal Mine is an underground and surface mine near Hedrina in Mpumalanga, South Africa.[4]

In 2021, all opencast and underground mining activities at the mine site were suspended, and there are no public plans to resume operations.[5] Located 27 kilometers northeast of Bethal and 20 km southwest of Hendrina, the Halfgewonnen colliery is owned and operated by the South African-based resources company Overlooked Colliery Alpha (Pty) Ltd.[5] Previously, Sudor Coal (Pty) Ltd. owned the mine.

Mining occurred at the between 2004 and 2020, however, as of 2021, all mining activities have ceased.[5] Processing activities are ongoing, however, as coal from the nearby Weltevreden Colliery is transported via overland conveyor to the Halfgewonnen processing area for crushing, screening and washing.[5] According to a June 2021 report by the environmental consulting service Cabanga Environmental, it is possible additional coal deposits within Halfgewonnen's mining right area may be identified in the future, however, there are currently no active plans to resume mining at the site.[5]

Before its operations were suspended, Halfgewonnen supplied coal to Camden Power Station which is owned by Eskom. The contract was valid until 2027.[6]
