Hami-Chongqing UHV Transmission Line power station (新疆天山北麓戈壁能源基地调峰电源, “疆电入渝”哈密至重庆特高压直流工程配套煤电项目) is an operating power station of at least 4000-megawatts (MW) in Barköl, Hami, Xinjiang, China. It is also known as 华电哈密2×100万千瓦煤电项目 (Unit 3 &4), 重庆能源哈密2×100万千瓦煤电项目 (Unit 1 & 2), 华电天山绿色能源有限公司2x100万千瓦煤电项目 (Unit 3 &4), 华润电力重能石头梅电厂 (Unit 1 & 2).

Background

This 4 x 1,000 MW ultra-supercritical coal power project will play a peak-shaving role for the Gobi Desert New Energy Base at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains and is part of the ‘Xinjiang Electricity to Chongqing’ via the new Hami-Chongqing ±800 kV UHV DC transmission line. In August 2022, the project was seeking it Environmental Impact Assessment permit for part of the project.[6] The project was reportedly granted permission to build in September 2022.[7][8][9]

The project has been split into two 2 x 1000 MW sub-projects and carried out by China Huadian Group with project name Huadian Xinjiang Hami power station (华电新疆哈密2×100万千瓦煤电项目) and Chongqing Energy Investment Group with project name Xinjiang Zhongneng Shitoumei power station (新疆重能石头梅2×100万千瓦煤电项目).[10]

Construction ceremony reportedly took place in September 2022.[9][11][12] Xinjiang Zhongneng Shitoumei power station started ground leveling and cleaning in March 2023.[13] However, concrete was only poured for both power stations on 30 June 2023.[10]

Power Construction Corporation of China won the bid for the construction of Huadian Xinjiang Hami 2 x 1000 MW coal power station.[14] In June 2023, biddings were underway for various EPC tenders related to construction.[15]

China Resources Group is responsible for constructing the Xinjiang Zhongneng Shitoumei power station.[16] Dongfang Electric Corporation is the first candidate to supply boiler, steam turbine, generator, and ESP for Xinjiang Zhongneng Shitoumei power station, while Harbin Electric Co. Ltd. is the second candidate.[17][18]

Units 1 & 2

This 2×1000MW project advanced significantly in 2024, with construction milestones including the completion of the chimney structure[19] and boiler water pressure test[20].

In 2025, Unit 1 completed critical commissioning steps including DCS power-on and achieved first grid connection in May 2025[21]. The unit successfully completed the 168-hour trial run in June 2025[22].

Unit 2 progressed alongside Unit 1, with major milestones including the completion of the indirect cooling tower in October 2024[23] and generator rotor installation in February 2025[24].

Unit 2 achieved its first grid connection in August 2025[25] and completed the 168-hour trial run in August 2025[26].

Units 3 & 4

This 2×1000MW project also progressed steadily, with the chimney structure completion in August 2024[27], generator stator installation in September 2024[28], and boiler water pressure test in November 2024[29]. Unit 3 achieved first grid connection in May 2025[30].

Unit 4 achieved first grid connection in August 2025[31] and completed the 168-hour trial run in August 2025[32].
