Background

Harding oil field was discovered in 1987 by Britoil (now owned by BP).[8] The field is composed of five separate reservoirs, which include the central field and four smaller fields to the North, North-East, South, and South-East. It began producing oil in 1996.[9]

Harding production of oil began in 1996 and peaked in 1999. It has produced 286.8 Mmbbl of oil and 129 bcf (22.2 Mmboe) of gas in its lifetime.[9]

Gas redevelopment project

In 2006, BP announced plans to develop the gas resources in the reservoir via the Harding Area Gas Project; however, the project was abandoned due multiple factors, including scope of work, high development costs, and low gas prices.[10] In 2013, TAQA completed the acquisition of the field from BP, becoming the operator of the field.[11] In 2017, TAQA and Maersk funded concept studies on potential facilities for supporting a project to exploit the remaining gas reserves at the field.[12][13] In 2019, TAQA submitted an environmental statement about a proposed project at Harding but the document was not made available to the public.[12]

Production at the gas field was expected to commence once the remaining recoverable oil has been produced from the area, although no clear FID or start date has been reported.[13]

Ownership

The field was originally owned by TAQA (70%), with TAQA Bratani Limited as the operator, and Maersk (30%).[10] In August 2018, Total acquired Maersk and its North Sea assets, including the 30% interest in the Harding oil field.[14][15] TAQA is a fully owned subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Energy Co.[16][17] In December 2021, TAQA was intent on selling its North Sea assets, including the Harding oil field.[18] This sale would also include the potential gas blowdown project at Harding and at TAQA’s other Quadrant 9 Area fields.[19]
