Background

The Lixhe cement plant, in tandem with the Low Emissions Intensity Lime and Cement (LEILAC) consortium completed the Calix carbon capture pilot project in 2018 and, in 2019, began commissioning a Direct Separation Calciner unit. The result was a CO2 separation of more than 95%. Additionally, in 2022, a bioelectric plant was permitted for the Lixhe cement plant site which will recover around 85,000 tonnes of end-of-life wood for the production of electricity, the majority of which will be consumed by the cement plant. In 2024, Heidelberg Materials Lixhe applied to expand the Romont quarry by 94.75 acres to ensure the plant's operation for the following 20 years.
