Background

The Heidelberg Materials Geseke cement plant was originally two adjacent cement plants; the Elsa cement plant and the Milke cement plant. The Elsa plant was taken over by Anneliese Zementwerke AG in 1972, which then in 1994 also took control of the Milke plant. Together, they formed the Geseke cement plant complex. Anneliese Zementwerke AG was taken over by Heidelberg Materials in 2005, which rebranded the plants as the Geseke cement plant.

The Geseke plant has a production capacity of around 1 million tonnes per year. The company is currently implementing the GeZero carbon capture project, which involves the construction of an oxyfuel kiln, carbon capture system, and train transport infrastructure at the Geseke plant. Set to be completed by 2029, the system will capture 0.7 million tonnes per year of carbon dioxide and make Geseke the first fully decarbonized cement plant in Germany.
